What a proper composite deck needs underneath
Tighter joist spacing
Composite boards span less than wood. Joists are spaced to the board maker's rules, and closer again for diagonal or picture-frame layouts.
Frost-ready footings
Posts sit on footings set deep enough to resist frost heave, so the deck doesn't shift after the first winter.
Joist protection
Protective tape on the tops of wood joists helps keep water from sitting on the framing under the boards.
Expansion gaps
Composite grows and shrinks with temperature. End and side gaps are set to the manufacturer's chart for the day it's installed.
