What we built
Twelve hundred square feet is not a deck, it is an outdoor floor. At that size the question stops being how big to make it and becomes how to stop it reading as a runway, because a single unbroken field of decking that large looks like a car park no matter what it is made of.
Three things break it up here. It steps down between the house side and the outer terrace, so there are two rooms rather than one expanse. A darker composite border frames the field on each level, which gives the eye an edge to land on. And the boards change direction across the step, so the two levels read as separate surfaces rather than one that ran out of room.
Composite earns its cost at this scale more than at any other. Twelve hundred square feet of wood is a full weekend of sanding and staining every other year, and nobody who owns a deck this size does it twice. Composite is a rinse. The premium over pressure-treated is real, but it is a one-time number against a job that repeats forever.
The site is what the glass is for. The house looks over mature trees, and a run of spindles at that length would have turned the view into a picket fence. Glass in black posts keeps the treeline whole and matches the window frames on the house.
The lighting is run into the step risers and the screen wall, wired at framing stage. That is the part worth planning early. Retrofitting lights into a finished composite deck means lifting boards, and on a deck this size that is most of a day's work to avoid a decision that costs very little at the right moment.
