Composite Fence Installation in Toronto and the GTA

Composite privacy fences that look like wood boards and never need staining. Posts set below the frost line, boards gapped to the maker's specs, and heights checked against your city's bylaw.

Why composite

A privacy fence you never stain

Composite fence boards are made from wood fibre and plastic, much like composite decking. They come in wood-grain colours and keep that colour without paint, stain or sealer. Many systems slide the boards into grooved posts, so each section goes up as one solid wall of boards.

  • No staining, sealing or painting
  • Boards resist rot and insects
  • Washes clean with a hose and mild soap
  • A choice of wood-grain colours and finishes
  • Same height rules as any other fence

We already build composite screen walls on decks, like this one in King City. A composite fence brings the same low-upkeep material to the property line. We go over the system and colours at the site visit.

What keeps a composite fence straight

Posts below the frost line

Posts go in concrete about 1.2 m (4 ft) deep so frost can't lift them. Where concrete runs right to the fence line, some systems bolt to the slab on a base plate.

Post spacing from the system

Each system sets its own distance between posts, often 1.8 to 2.4 m (6 to 8 ft). We lay out the line to that number so every board fits.

Room to move

Composite grows and shrinks with temperature. Boards get the end gap the manufacturer calls for, so they don't bind in summer heat.

Stronger gate posts

A gate puts the most load on its hinge post. That post gets the reinforcement the system calls for, so the gate keeps closing properly.

Good fit

Is composite the right fence for you?

  • You want full privacy and don't want to stain every few years
  • You like the look of wood boards more than vinyl's smooth finish
  • You plan to stay long enough for the upkeep savings to count

If budget comes first, a pressure-treated fence costs less up front. If you want the lowest price per foot with no upkeep, look at vinyl. Before any fence goes in, we book locates through Ontario One Call and check your property line against the survey.

Composite fence questions

How much does a composite fence cost in Toronto?
Most composite fences run $90 to $160 per linear foot installed, before HST. That puts 100 ft at about $9,000 to $16,000. Gates and taking out the old fence are extra. Your written quote gives one price once we have seen photos or the yard. The fence cost guide compares every fence type.
Is a composite fence better than wood?
It costs more than pressure-treated wood and starts around the price of cedar, but you never stain it. Wood is cheaper to patch and easy to match later. If you would rather not spend a weekend staining every few years, composite usually pays you back in time. Our wood fence page covers the other side.
Composite or vinyl fence?
Neither one needs paint or stain. Vinyl has a smooth, even finish and usually costs less. Composite has a wood-grain look and feel, which is why most people pick it. See our vinyl fence page to compare.
How tall can a composite fence be?
The same as any other fence. Your city's bylaw sets the limit, not the material. Most Toronto backyard fences can be 2.0 m (6 ft 7 in), with lower limits in front yards. Our fence height guide lists the limits for 28 GTA municipalities.
Can a composite fence go in during winter?
Posts need ground that isn't frozen to set properly, so fall beats January. Manufacturers also set board gaps by the temperature on the day of install. Our fall and winter fence guide explains what can go ahead in the cold.
