Aluminum Railing Installation in Toronto and the GTA
Black and white aluminum railings for decks, stairs and porches. Powder-coated posts and pickets that don't rot or need stain, bolted into blocked framing and built to the Ontario Building Code.

A full aluminum railing, or aluminum pickets in wood
Aluminum goes on a deck in one of two ways. From the yard they look alike. They differ in what holds the pickets and what you maintain afterwards.
- Full aluminum system: powder-coated posts, top rail, bottom rail and pickets, usually black, sometimes white. Each post bolts down through a base plate. Nothing to stain, ever
- Aluminum pickets in a wood frame: wood posts and a wood top rail with black aluminum spindles between them. It matches a cedar or pressure-treated deck and gives you a wide wood cap to set a drink on. The wood still needs stain or sealer
On a composite deck the full system makes more sense, since the point of composite is not having to maintain anything. On a cedar deck like this one in Halton Hills, aluminum spindles in a cedar frame keep the warm wood look and drop the wood pickets, which are usually the first part of a railing to split and grey.

Aluminum railing cost in the GTA
Installed prices before HST, the same ranges as our deck cost guide. Checked October 2026. Height, corners, gates, stairs and tight access move the price. Aluminum pickets in a wood frame are quoted job by job. The final number comes from photos or a site visit.
| Railing | Installed, per linear ft | 40 ft of railing |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum picket railing | $85 to $140 | $3,400 to $5,600 |

What an aluminum railing needs to pass inspection
An engineered system
Wood guards have a standard design the Code accepts. Aluminum doesn't. Markham and Kitchener both say metal guards need a professional engineer's design, and Oshawa asks for stamped details on any prefabricated railing. We confirm the system's engineering before we order.
Posts fastened to the frame
A railing system's engineering usually covers the railing, not your deck. One Canadian system's engineering letter states that anchoring the posts was not part of its review. So every base plate bolts through to solid blocking in the framing, not just into the deck boards.
Height and gaps
Guards are 900 mm (36 in) up to 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) above grade, and 1070 mm (42 in) above that. No opening can let a 100 mm (4 in) sphere through. Our railing height guide has the full rules.
Nothing to climb
Between 140 mm (5-1/2 in) and 900 mm (36 in) above the deck, a guard can't give a child a foothold. Vertical pickets pass. Horizontal bar and cable styles are where this rule bites, so we check the system before you settle on one.

Is aluminum the right railing for your deck?
- You want a railing you never stain or paint
- The deck is composite, or pressure-treated and you want it to look like more than lumber
- You'd rather put the budget into the deck than into glass
- The railing runs down a set of stairs, where glass costs the most
Black is the colour most people pick. On a pressure-treated deck it puts a dark line around the edge, and the eye stops reading wood. White suits white siding and trim, and shows dirt sooner.
Pickets still break up the view. If the deck looks over a ravine, a pool or a garden you care about, a common split is glass facing the yard and aluminum on the sides and stairs.
