Fence Installation and Repair in Oshawa

We build and repair wood, vinyl, aluminum and chain link fences across Oshawa, from the older streets near downtown and the lake to the newer subdivisions in Windfields and Kedron. Oshawa lets a fence within 2.0 m (6 ft 7 in) of a rear or side lot line go up to 2.2 m (7 ft 2 in), which is taller than most of the GTA. Front yard fences stop at 0.9 m (2 ft 11 in).

Fences we install in Oshawa

Installed prices per linear foot, before HST. A full-height 2.2 m (7 ft 2 in) fence needs longer posts and more boards than a standard 6 ft fence, so it prices toward the top of each range. Removing the old fence and adding gates come on top.

Pressure-treated privacy$70 to $100Privacy on a budget. Takes stain once it dries out

We also build walk and drive gates and handle fence repair. Full pricing is in the fence cost guide.

Local rules

Oshawa fence rules

The heights come from Oshawa's Fence and Sight Triangle By-law 23-2014. It sets limits rather than a permit process, so a fence that meets them doesn't need a permit. Pool enclosures are covered by a separate by-law and do need one.

Near rear and side lot lines

2.2 m (7 ft 2 in)

Any fence within 2.0 m (6 ft 7 in) of a rear or side lot line. Section 4.3 of the by-law.

Front yard

0.9 m (2 ft 11 in)

Front yard fences are capped at 0.9 m. Hedges and shrubs aren't height-limited unless they sit in a sight triangle. Section 4.2.

Corner lots

0.9 m in the sight triangle

The triangle formed by points 6.0 m (19 ft 8 in) back along each street line from the corner stays under 0.9 m, fences and plants included. Section 4.6.

Beside a driveway

0.9 m in the sight triangle

The triangle measured 3.0 m (9 ft 10 in) along the street line and 3.0 m along the side of the driveway stays under 0.9 m too. Sight triangle rules apply everywhere except the downtown Urban Growth Centre.

Pool enclosure

1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) minimum

Higher than most GTA cities. The enclosure, gate included, has to be between 1.5 m and 2.2 m. It needs a permit, the application fee is $250, and it has to pass inspection before the pool is filled.

Over the limit

Exemption

Apply to the City's Director with a site plan. Neighbours get 10 business days' notice, and the decision can be appealed to a Hearings Officer. The fee is set in the City's fees and charges by-law.

Building in Oshawa

Taller boundary fences take stronger posts

Oshawa is one of the few GTA cities where a backyard fence along the lot line can go to 2.2 m (7 ft 2 in). That extra height helps against a busy road or a two-storey house next door, but it puts more wind load on every post. On taller fences we use 6x6 posts rather than 4x4, the same as on the 150 ft lattice-top fence we built in Oshawa.

The 2.2 m limit is written for fences within 2.0 m of a rear or side lot line. If you want a privacy screen out in the middle of the yard, ask us to confirm what applies before you plan around it.

In the newer subdivisions in north Oshawa, look for drainage swales and easements along the lot lines before you plan a fence. The City can require a structure that blocks access to an easement to be removed at the owner's expense. Our new build backyard guide covers what to check.

The by-law also bans electrified fences and fences built with razor wire, barbed wire or sharp projections.

Fence repair

Fence repair in Oshawa

The Oshawa fence on our project page shows how most fences fail here. The boards and lattice were mostly fine. The posts had gone at ground level, whole sections leaned, and the bottom rails had lifted off the grade.

If the boards are still sound, replacing the failed posts is often enough. A wood post set in fresh concrete runs about $250 to $500 per post, installed, before HST. When the posts and the boards have both had it, a new fence on the same line makes more sense, which is what that owner chose.

Gates that drag or won't latch usually mean the hinge post has moved, so we fix the post first and then the gate. More on fence repair and gates.

Oshawa fence questions

How tall can a fence be in Oshawa?
Up to 2.2 m (7 ft 2 in) within 2.0 m (6 ft 7 in) of a rear or side lot line, and 0.9 m (2 ft 11 in) in the front yard. Everything inside a corner or driveway sight triangle is capped at 0.9 m as well. That comes from the City's Fence and Sight Triangle By-law 23-2014.
Do you need a permit for a fence in Oshawa?
Not under the fence by-law, which sets heights rather than a permit process. Pool enclosures do need a permit. If the fence is part of a bigger project, Service Oshawa (905-436-3311) can confirm what applies to your lot.
How tall does a pool fence have to be in Oshawa?
At least 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) and no more than 2.2 m (7 ft 2 in), gate included. That is higher than the 1.2 m most GTA cities ask for. You need a pool enclosure permit ($250 application fee) and an inspection before you fill the pool. Our pool fence guide compares the rules by city.
Who pays for a fence between neighbours in Oshawa?
Usually the two owners agree to split it. Ontario's Line Fences Act gives neighbours a formal fence-viewer process if they can't agree, but any municipality can opt out of it, so check with Service Oshawa before you rely on it. Our fence line guide covers the steps.
How much does a 150 ft fence cost in Oshawa?
About $10,500 to $15,000 before HST for 150 ft of pressure-treated privacy fence, or about $13,500 to $18,000 in cedar. Gates and removing the old fence are extra. See the fence cost guide.
