What we built
Fences do not fail at the boards. They fail at the posts, and everything else on a fence is downstream of that.
The fence that came off this line shows it. The boards were still there and the lattice was still on top, but the posts had gone, so whole sections were leaning off plumb and the bottom rail had lifted away from grade. That is the normal way a fence ends, and it is why replacing boards on old posts buys you a season rather than a fence.
This one is on 6x6 posts. Most fence in the GTA goes up on 4x4, and 4x4 is what a quote gets cheaper by using. The difference shows up in two places. A 6x6 has far more resistance to twist, which is the failure you actually see on older fences, where a post has corkscrewed and taken a whole section out of line with it. And it gives you more material around every fastener, so the rail connections still have something to hold onto in ten years rather than chewed-out end grain.
On this fence the post size is not a luxury, it is the reason the lattice works. Lattice is a sail. Adding a foot of it on top does not just add a foot of height, it adds wind load at the very top of the post, which is the worst possible place for leverage. A run that would have been fine at six feet on 4x4 becomes a different structural problem with lattice above it. Going to 6x6 is what lets the top foot be decorative instead of the thing that eventually pushes the fence over.
The height is worth knowing about. Most people assume six feet is the legal ceiling. In Oshawa a fence within two metres of a rear or side lot line can go to 2.2 metres, which is a shade over seven feet two. Six feet of boards with lattice above lands inside that, so you get the extra privacy and the open top without needing an exemption.
At 150 feet, staying straight is its own job. Over that distance small errors compound, and a line that is out by an inch at one end reads as a bend from the yard. The run gets strung and the posts get set to the string rather than to each other.
Replacing a fence has one trap in it. The old post holes are in the wrong place and full of the wrong material, and setting new posts into them is how a new fence starts moving in its first winter. New holes, fresh concrete, and the old ones filled and compacted properly.
The gate is the part of a fence that gets used most and thought about least. A walk gate is opened thousands of times over its life, all of that load hanging off one hinge post. That post gets set deeper and carries more than a line post, because a gate that has dropped an inch is the thing a homeowner notices every single day.
