What we built
The deck sits almost at grade, one step down to the lawn, which is what you want off a walk-out at the back of a house on a flat lot. No railing is needed at that height, so nothing stands between the deck and the garden.
The roof is what makes it. An uncovered deck in Aurora is usable for about four months and only when it is neither raining nor thirty degrees in the open sun. Put a roof over it and the same deck works from April to October, through a shower, and stays cool enough to sit on in August. It is the single change that gets the most extra use out of a deck, and it costs less than making the deck bigger.
It is framed as a proper roof rather than a pergola. Timber posts down to the deck, a beam, rafters tied back to the house wall, then shingles matching the existing roof and a soffit finished underneath. From the lawn it reads as part of the house, not as something bolted to the back of it.
Posts landing on a deck have to line up with the framing underneath, so the post positions were set before the decking went down. It is the sort of thing that has to be decided at the start. Adding a roof to a finished deck usually means pulling boards up to get at the joists.
