What we built
What came out was a deck at the end of its life sitting next to a concrete patio that had cracked and dropped at one corner. Two surfaces, both past it, neither big enough on its own. The new deck takes over the whole footprint, which is usually the right answer when a yard has grown a patchwork over the years.
Three hundred square feet in one piece changes what a back garden can do. You get a table and chairs and a barbecue without anything having to move for anything else, and there is only one level to step down from instead of a deck onto a patio onto grass.
The railing carries lattice panels rather than open spindles. Lattice buys you privacy from the neighbouring yards without building a solid wall that would block the light and make the deck feel boxed in, and on a lot this width that matters more than it would on a deeper property.
The timing is visible in the photos. The deck went in while the house was being re-clad, which is why there is building wrap behind it in the earlier shots and cream siding in the later ones. Running the two together is worth doing where you can, because the deck ledger and the cladding meet at the house wall and it is far easier to get that junction right once than to open it up twice.
