What we built
Cedar is the step up from pressure-treated, and this is what you are paying for. It mills cleaner, so the boards sit flatter and the joints stay tighter. It goes up the colour you see here instead of the green cast treated lumber starts with. And it moves less as it dries, which is what keeps a solid board fence from opening up gaps in its first summer.
Left alone it fades to a silver grey over a few seasons. Stain it if you want to hold the warm colour, but it does not need anything to last.
The boards run vertical and butt against each other rather than sitting in a spaced pattern, so there is no line of sight through it at all. That is the point on a lot where the neighbours are close on both sides.

A 280 square foot deck in Stouffville brought back instead of torn out. Boards had split right through in places, a corner post had rotted out at its base and the paint had failed across the whole structure. We replaced what had gone, rebuilt the railing where it was needed, and repainted the deck so the new work sits flush with the old.
