Deck Rebuild and Privacy Fence in King City

What we built

The deck that was here had reached the end of its life. The boards had gone grey and soft in places and the frame under them was not worth saving, so the whole thing came out rather than getting patched over.

The new deck sits on the same footprint, about 300 square feet, low to the ground with a full width step down to the lawn instead of stairs. At that height a step reads as part of the deck and keeps the yard open, which matters when the deck takes up a good share of the usable space back there.

Privacy was the other half of the job. About 50 linear feet of horizontal pressure-treated boards went up on posts tied into the deck structure, with the top section left as spaced slats. Solid boards the whole way would have walled the yard in. The open top blocks sightlines where people actually sit and still lets the light and the tree line through.

The stone retaining wall down one side and the old lattice fence at the far corner stayed put, so the new boards were set out to meet them cleanly rather than leave an awkward gap.
