What we built
The side yard here is the gap between two houses, and the ground on one side sits higher than the other. A fence dropped straight into that with posts dug in the normal way would have had nothing solid to sit in, and nothing holding the higher side back either.
So we poured a concrete base along the line first. It does two jobs. The chain link posts are set into it, which gives them a far better footing than a narrow post hole in disturbed ground. And it acts as a low retaining wall, holding back the gravel and grade on the high side so the fence line stays where we put it.
That mattered here because the foundation alongside had been waterproofed and backfilled with clear stone. Loose stone against a fence line is the kind of thing that slumps and pushes posts out of plumb over a few winters. The concrete base keeps it where it belongs and keeps the drainage doing its job.

Boards had split right through in places, a corner post had rotted out at its base and the paint had failed across the whole structure. We replaced what had gone, rebuilt the railing where it was needed, and repainted the deck so the new work sits flush with the old.
