What we built
Two things made this fence line harder than it looks in the photos. The ground falls away across the yard, and the property line runs through mature trees.
An auger would have been faster and would have cut straight through the roots. Roots that size are the tree, not an obstacle in front of it, and cutting them is how a healthy tree ends up coming down two summers later. So every post hole on the treed sections was dug by hand, working around what was there and moving a post rather than a root where the two disagreed.
The slope is the other half. A fence on falling ground either steps down in even increments or it follows the grade, and mixing the two looks like a mistake. This one was set out to work with the ground rather than fight it, so the top line reads as deliberate.
