What we built
A new three storey house on a narrow city lot puts the main floor well above the garden, which leaves you with a long drop at the back door and a yard nobody uses. The deck bridges it, and the stairs are the part that decides whether the garden gets used or just looked at.
They run wide rather than dropping as a narrow flight. On a lot this width a steep set of stairs in the middle of the yard cuts it in half. A wide, shallow run reads as part of the deck and leaves the paved area below open.
The railing is black metal rather than wood. Against white render and dark window frames it matches what the house is already doing, and it keeps the sightline down the yard open in a way a run of timber spindles would not.
The cedar fence and gate close the yard from the rear lane. On a laneway lot that fence is doing two jobs at once, privacy from the lane and security for the back of the house, so it was built solid rather than as a screen, with the gate lining up with the paved path so there is a clear run from the lane to the stairs.
