What we built
A restaurant patio on a city sidewalk has a problem a backyard fence does not. You cannot dig footings into a public sidewalk, so nothing can be set in the ground the normal way.
Every post on this run sits on a steel base plate on the pavers instead. That means the screen has to carry its own weight and stand up to wind on its own, which changes how the panels and posts are built and how the whole run is tied together.
The panels were made as an open lattice rather than a solid board fence. It marks the edge of the patio clearly, which is what the licence requires, while still letting light through and keeping the restaurant visible from the street. A 300 sq ft pergola covers the end of the patio nearest the entrance.
All pressure-treated, about 200 linear feet of screen in total.
