What we built
The deck that came off this house had been there about 25 years. It was past the point where swapping boards was worth doing, because everything behind the boards was the same age as the boards.
So the whole thing came out, framing and all, and the deck was built again from the ground up. That is the right call once a deck is that old. New boards screwed down over tired framing look fine for a season, then every problem underneath works its way back to the surface.
The new deck is pressure-treated throughout. The yard is tight and overlooked on both sides, so instead of open railings we built full height walls in horizontal boards, with a bench worked into the run along the back. About a week on site from demolition to finish.
